Vinyl Gloves

Disposable vinyl gloves are an inexpensive and very convenient form of lightweight hand protection for medical staff, carers and anyone working in potentially contagious environments, or handling substances which could damage the skin. They prevent hands from becoming stained by strongly coloured matter such as oil, paint, beetroot and some spices. 

They can also be useful for maintaining hygiene in food preparation and when handling pungent items such as onions and garlic. Because they are thin and flexible they are easy to wear when performing almost all tasks and allow the wearer to have a clear sense of touch and feel. 

The limitations of vinyl gloves are that when stretched while they are worn, they become slightly porous, so cannot be relied on for medical levels of hygiene, and they are also subject to tearing because the material is relatively weak. 

What are vinyl gloves?

Vinyl gloves are worn to protect hands from liquids and potentially damaging substances, as well as to prevent infection and contagion. They are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and are completely synthetic. As a result, they do not give rise to allergic reactions and irritation associated with latex rubber. 

Are nitrile gloves better than vinyl?

Nitrile gloves give similar levels of protection to the hand as vinyl gloves, but they are much more robust. Nitrile is a type of synthetic rubber and is much more resistant to tearing and puncturing than vinyl. As a result, it is fair to consider them a superior product. 

What are vinyl gloves powdered with?

The most common powder used in vinyl gloves is a type of cornstarch, although talcum powder is also used. The powder makes taking gloves off and on easier because it absorbs moisture that naturally arises on and around the hand and fingers.
